Apply time management-oriented Pomodoro technique with the handy appindicator Tomate

Possessing a computer introduces one to multiple applications, data sources, optimization tools, etc, basically, providing a wide range of means to achieve one's intended objectives, such as writing a book, coding, editing video, etc.

Across the years, various work "veterans", psychologists, human behavior experts, etc, have tried to optimize the human behavior in multiple ways, with the declared goal of proper focus on tasks, while reducing the mental stress, brain "overheating" and retaining a faster, better, superior method of achieving "something".

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method (developed in the late '80s), that filters a person through a chopped time period, in the sense of breaking down one's work time into 25 minutes-long time intervals, named Pomodoros.
Pomodoro's main "ground" is based on the believe that frequent breaks generate improved mental agility.

The technique is easy to use, as such:

  • user setts a task about-to-be-done
  • user starts the pomodoro (the 25 minute time period)
  • user works during the pomodoro happening
  • user takes a 5 minute break
  • every four pomodoros the user takes a longer 15 minutes break

Tomate is a handy appindicator, designed with the Pomodoro technique in mind, basically, implementing the mentioned time optimization process into an appindicator.

Launching Tomate, presents the user an appindicator and a simplistic yet good-looking window, housing:

  • the bottom-left Pomodoro contains 25 minutes time intervals
  • Short Break features 5 minutes time periods

  • Long Break stands for Pomodoro's longer 15 minutes break

Its usage, following the mentioned Pomodoro technique, starts with clicking Pomodoro and the top-left Starts the timer button, followed by user' taking the short and (after 4 pomodoros) the long break.

Tomate uses sound attentions, like for instance, starting a Short Break and completing it, triggers a short yet "powerful" sound, indicating the should-return to another work-intensive pomodoro.

The handy utility comes with proper Ubuntu integration, displaying various messages via notifications, furthermore, adding a Unity launcher progressbar, progress in accordance to elapsed time.
