Easily create Japanese-English flashcards with FlashGen

Flashcards are cards or set of cards containing informations, informations exposed in cards in order to be properly "digested", easier to learn (as compared to traditional methods), "forcing" the mind to easily understand and store various displayed informations.

Flashcards are usually bearing vocabulary terms, formulas, foreign language words, various expressions, historical dates, etc, usually featuring a double-sided approach, in the sense of being exposed both as questions and answers (like for instance, the question being written on one "face" of the card and the answer on the other face of the same card) or foreign/familiar term (a foreign language word on one face of a card, the in-use-language translated word on the "opposite" face of the card).

FlashGen is a handy utility, useful to generate flashcards, tool shaped around learning the Japanese language via a flashcard method, meaning, creating FlashGen flashcards, the user is able to progressively learn new Japanese words.

Creating a flashcard (containing Japanese terms "versus" English terms) is as easily as opening the application and add English words via Add From Search and Add From Vocab List.

Typing an English word (such as house) under Add From Search and clicking Go, generates a numerous list containing Japanese words in relation to house' multiple connotations (such as residence, den, habitat, address, etc); clicking Add All (or adding words one-by-one by selecting them, action that pushes the selected definitions into the bottom area), adds the word definitions to the bottom area.

In order to simultaneously add multiple words, navigate to Add From Vocab List and type words (separated by space, such as house dog man tree), clicking Define and Add To List adds the words to the bottom area.

The mentioned tabs act as gatherers, while the actual flashcard creation is to be achieved under Edit and Create; hitting the Commit From All Tabs, pushes the created word sequences from Add From Search and Add From Vocab List into the Edit and Create's list view.

Flashcards can be saved/generated as CSV and TSV file formats, action that is to be performed via the Generate File button.

FlashGen is an effective flashcard generator (without viewing support), yet, in order to take advantage of the created flashcards, the user is to use a dedicated flashcard viewer, such as Granule (with support for CSV format, available via Ubuntu Software Center).

FlashGen 12.07 is available for free via Ubuntu Software Center.

FlashGen has been created as part of Ubuntu App Showdown.
