Fogger landed in Ubuntu Software Center
Days ago, Ubuntu announced a new exciting technology, Ubuntu Web Apps, targeted at making the web a first class citizen on the Ubuntu desktop, by integrating numerous web applications into the desktop via a no-compromise full desktop integration layer, in the sense of allowing web apps to be accessed, managed, started, stopped, etc, similarly to regular applications.
Consequently, taking a native road, the integrated web apps feature Messaging Menu integration, enhanced Unity launcher quicklist, regular desktop notification bubble, count badge, etc.
Born as an Ubuntu App Showdown entry, Fogger has been designed with an original approach in mind, integrating web apps (online places, such as web sites) yet containing/exposing them in a separate "frame", meaning, creating a Fogger web app, isolates the created web app's data (cache, entered account, download items, etc) in a unique box, untouched by one's web-browser activities, Gwibber's used accounts, Thunderbird's set email account, etc.
Consequently, Fogger usage does not exclude the availability on the desktop of web apps, web-browsers, social clients, etc, but can be used as complementary and/or stand-alone.
Creating a new Fogger app is as simple as running Create a new fog app (launch it via the Dash by typing fogger in the search area), followed by entering the desired URL and a preferred name (used to later identify and access the created web app).
Typing a web address, automatically fetches the website's "favicon", using it as web app's launching icon, approach that is to enhance its usability and ease of use.
The created Fogger app presents the user a full webpage view with all of its details (just as in full-fledged web-browsers), consequently, after creating an account-aware application (such as Reddit), the user (on-demand) is to enter Reddit's username and password, needed for a full experience.
A definitely original and interesting aspect of Fogger is its default support to 1-click away delete the data gathered from using a Fogger web app, independent of other Fogger web apps, meaning, creating a Fogger applications for Reddit, Gmail, etc, (by using them) gathers application data, data that can be easily cleared per web app under Reddit-->Preferences-->Privacy-->Reset Data, action that will delete the entire local database per-web app, furthermore, Fogger exposes per-web-app the used disk space.
Downloading a torrent from a torrent-based Fogger web app is to be performed by right-clicking on the download link-->Download Linked File, action's progress displayed via a minimalistic yet fancy dialog, notification bubble (at completion), furthermore, by clicking the bottom-right Show Downloads, the user is presented the folder containing the downloaded items.
Along with the mentioned features, Fogger comes by default with a dedicated Unity lens, thus exposing the created Fogger apps, from where the user can properly access and observe the created apps, nevertheless, the created Fogger apps can be directly launched via Dash's home view by simply typing their name.
Fogger 0.2.3 is available via Ubuntu Software Center.
Restart the computer, in order to use the Unity Fogger lens.
