Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (and other releases, too) shipped with open source graphic drivers by default, drivers capable of handling the complex Unity shell and also usual graphic-demanding actions, such as playing 1080p movies, viewing images with huge resolutions, etc, meaning basically, the mentioned graphic drivers have achieved an usable state, appropriate and "enough" for a solid amount of users.
